There may be a chill in the air but the cooler months bring many reasons to love life in our area.

Palm Beach, Avalon and surrounding suburbs are one of Sydney’s most popular areas. In summer, we welcome thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the stunning surroundings, relax at our beautiful beaches and support local businesses.

From December to the Easter long weekend, the Peninsula is a hive of activity. We are also lucky to be able to enjoy the quieter times that winter brings, when we can recuperate and enjoy the village lifestyle at a slower pace.

Tourist numbers and activities drop off over winter but that’s not to say there isn’t plenty to do in June, July and August. Here are a few different events and activities to take advantage of:

Markets and car boot sales

Take the opportunity to spruce up your home or clear out some clutter with local winter markets and car boot sales.

Palm Beach market is held on the fourth Sunday of every month at Governor Phillip Park, from 9am to 3pm. Shoppers can peruse collections of jewellery, home wares and fashion. There is also plenty of food on offer to take home or enjoy in the winter sun. If you’re interested, you can set up your own stall. Simply book via the website: http://thebeachesmarket.com/market-palm-beach/

If you have a few items you want to offload, you can also ‘pop your boot’ at the Avalon Car Boot Sale. Held at Dunbar Park on July 21, this community event is a great way to sell your pre-loved household goods and a positive alternative to sending unwanted belongings to landfill. With live music, fresh coffee and a sausage sizzle, this is a great family day out. The cost for vendors is $40 per car.

Healthy activities

Many locals swim all year round on the Peninsula. With water temperatures ranging from a fresh 16 to a ‘mild’ 20 degrees, you can embrace the chill or invest in a full length wetsuit and dive in off one of our many beaches this winter.

If you’re feeling brave, dip a toe in the ocean for the Mona Vale Winter Solstice Swim on June 24. Entry fee is $25 and there will be a very welcome soup kitchen waiting to warm you up when you get out of the water.

Alternatively, for those who can bring yourself to peel off the blankets, you’ll appreciate the stunning beauty of our surroundings at Sunrise Yoga at Avalon SLSC. These Wednesday morning classes are held during the school term, starting at 6am, with drop-in prices available.

At Avalon Sailing Club, the winter racing series kicks off in April. Competing vessels are always seeking crew members so contact the club (and invest in some warm gear) if you’d like to take part.

Take a winter walk from Palm Beach To Barrenjoey Lighthouse

This 2.2km loop will take you anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half, and falls somewhere between easy and moderate difficulty. If you can strap on a backpack, we highly recommend stopping off and having a picnic once you reach the top. Take the walk between May and November and you may even see some whales.

Treat yourself

We’ve all daydreamed about indulging with the full experience up at Jonah’s in Palm Beach. During winter, you can book in for a winter getaway and enjoy a three-course a-la-carte dinner, overnight accommodation, a full a-la-carte breakfast and a gift on departure from Sunday – Thursday for a special price.

At Barrenjoey House, the winter special menu includes entrees, mains and desserts from the a-la-carte or specials menu at only $69. Choose a table near the fire for the perfect winter evening.

Down the road in Newport, Bert’s Bar and Brasserie (adjacent to The Newport Hotel) is hosting a series of wine dinners, hosted by world-class winemakers. Enjoy a number of specially curated wines throughout the evening, with a bespoke four-course menu to match, every Wednesday throughout winter.

The beauty of winter on the Peninsula is you can choose to take part in one of the area’s many activities or simply enjoy staying rugged up and enjoying your beautiful home.
